It was interesting to see how it made her uncomfortable to eat a beef hamburger, which is such a normal thing in our culture. This section of a biography of a living person needs additional citations for verification. The only meats I eat are chicken, turkey, and fish and would definitely not feel comfortable eating venison or elk, ever. Its interesting to learn about this lifestyle because it is so different from anything I have ever experienced. I also liked the connection from the beginning of the story to the last paragraph about the feeling of horror, awe, and kinship when eating game. This shows how the author can actually relate with her father on this topic. I loved how she made her father seem like he was completely comfortable with the hunting and eating of those animals throughout the whole story, but at the end we learn that he did feel sadness when the family pet lamb was killed for dinner. Through the specific scenes that she describes, I was able to gain an understanding for how this topic makes her feel and has effected her entire life. I liked how Peterson was able to portray her point of view so effectively in this piece. I feel like thinking deeply about how the animals were killed for my benefit would only make me not want to eat the meat even more. It was interesting to read how they “become the spirit and body of the animals” they eat. I’m not sure if I’d be able to eat game if I was brought up in a family where hunting for game was an everyday thing. Personally, I try not to think about the animals that are sacrificed for my meals so it was pretty hard to read without feeling terrible for any animal that is killed for human consumption. I found this memoir to be a very interesting read. ![]()
